How to Exercise with Wigs

Exercising with a wig can feel daunting, so our Alopecia Ambasssador, Abby Andrew, gives insightful tips on how to workout in a wig comfortably and without accidentally damaging it. When exercising with a wig, you should ask yourself two questions: Are you doing an activity that will cause you to stress excessively? How secure does the wig need to be on your head? Keeping these questions in-mind will help determine the type of wig you should wear.

Tips for Exercising With A Wig

KEEP YOUR WIG SECURE

If a wig fits you properly, you shouldn’t have to worry about your wig falling off during an activity, however if you feel like it is slipping, be sure to check the straps on the back of the wig. All of Rene of Paris wig caps are adjustable.

KEEP WIG OUT OF YOUR FACE

LONG WIGS:

If you’re wearing a longer wig, you should tie it back like you would your normal hair. Abby likes wearing the Hayden wig in Rose Gold-R from the Amore Collection, and ties it back in a casual ponytail. She personally prefers wearing shorter wigs while exercising as she doesn’t need to tie it back or worry about hair getting in her face.

SHORT WIGS:

Abby likes to wear the Codi wig in Creamy Blond from the Amore Collection while working out as it’s lightweight and doesn’t get in her face during strenuous exercises.

KEEP A DESIGNATED “WORKOUT WIG”

If you wear a synthetic wig on a daily basis, it has an average lifespan of 4-6 months. If you plan on replacing it with a duplicate wig, instead of tossing out your old wig, use it as your designated “workout wig” and tie it back in a pony tail or bun. Abby likes to wear the Tatum wig from the Amore Collection as her go-to “workout wig.”

USE A HALO WIG

If you get too hot wearing a full wig, try a “halo wig” while working out with a hat. A “halo wig” is a wig that only has hair on the sides and not on the top so your scalp will have open air. Abby likes the Wavy Bob Halo wig in Honey Brown from Rene of Paris Collection and has removed the detachable bangs. It’s ideal to wear something like a Christine Headwear turban or just a casual sports cap. If still too hot, you can try pulling your hair back in a ponytail or bun.  To see Abby exercise in her wig and talk about these points, please watch the video below.
