DIFFERENT WIG CAP CONSTRUCTIONS
A Comprehensive Guide to Wig Caps: Choosing the Best Fit for You
Wigs have become an essential part of fashion, beauty, and medical hair solutions. When you’re looking for the right wig to wear, understanding different wig cap constructions can be key to selecting the best wig for your needs. Here at Aderans Hair Goods, through our renowned brands: Rene of Paris, Amore, Noriko, Alexander Couture, Orchid, Fair Fashion and Muse, we offer a wide variety of wig caps to suit different preferences, budgets and lifestyles. Some of our wigs are straightforward in nature – such as machine made or double monofilament. But we also have countless variations and features such as lace front and extended lace front, lace part, hand-tied, partial monofilament, soft net, single monofilament, and so much more – but all of our wig caps feature adjustable straps in the nape of the neck where you can make them bigger or smaller by about an inch either way. Some feature a strap style, while others are velcro.
Cap constructions are determined by our wig designers based on factors such as the style and ideal price range. As one can imagine, a machine tied cap runs at a lower price point than a hand-tied double monofilament cap. If you wanted a wig to have a lot of volume, then a machine made cap is important to get that look, while a monofilament cap offers a more natural and close to the head look.
Let’s dive into some of our most popular cap constructions in more detail, hoping these insights can assist in helping you pick your next wig!
Types of Wig Caps
MACHINE MADE CAPS
Machine made wig caps are among the most common and affordable options available. These wigs are designed with wefts sewn together to create a voluminous and durable structure. Open wefting ensures breathability, making them comfortable for daily wear. Machine made caps often feature permatease which provides fullness and a backcombing effect. This cap construction is perfect for those looking for a glamorous, full and voluminous look. While we do have machine tied caps on longer wigs, the most popular style of wig to have a machine tied cap is for shorter wigs that require the hair to be full throughout the look. Also styles with bangs are great for this cap construction as the hairline is covered.
MONOFILAMENT WIG CAPS
Wigs with monofilament cap constructions offer a highly natural appearance as the cap features wig fibers that are individually tied onto a fine mesh cap. These wigs create the illusion of natural hair growth, allowing for multi-directional parting. While you can find monofilament throughout our collections, our Amore Collection specializes in monofilament caps, including both single and double monofilament caps. When someone is looking for a very natural look with a lot of flexibility in parting, moving the hair around and pulling it back, a monofilament wig cap is a great option.
Both single and double monofilament cap constructions feature a sheer top that mimic the scalp. The difference between single and double monofilament caps are that the double monofilament caps feature an extra layer of monofilament for added comfort, which is especially suitable for individuals with sensitive scalps or those experiencing hair loss, such as from alopecia.
LACE FRONT WIGS
Lace front wigs have become increasingly popular due to their realistic hairlines. While monofilament wig cap constructions have the hand tied throughout the whole cap, lace front cap constructions feature hand tied lace at the front of the wig by the forehead. This construction is perfect for individuals who want to achieve a seamless blend between the wig and their natural hairline. It’s great for pulling back the wigs into styles such as a half up, half down hairstyle. Some of our wigs have extended ear-to-ear lace, where the lace is featured throughout the whole front of the wig. We have an XO Plus cap in the Amore line that enhances the realism of lace front wigs by combining a lace front with monofilament features. An important note is that all of our lace front wigs have the lace pre-trimmed for easy wearing and ready to wear functionality.
LACE PART WIGS
When a wig has a lace part, this means that the part area has hand-tied lace. This is an optimal feature when a style has a strong part look and you want it to look natural in that area. Some of our wigs have wider lace parts where there’s a little bit of flexibility in moving the part a little to the left or right. A wider lace part can also be known as a partial monofilament top, where part of the cap construction is hand-tied with lace instead of machine made wefting. If you’re looking for a style that looks very natural, but also has volume, a lace part wig would be a great choice!
HAND TIED WIGS
For the most lightweight and flexible wear, hand-tied wigs are an excellent choice. Each hair strand is meticulously tied to create a soft and natural look. The Amore collection features hand-tied options which provide a lightweight feel ideal for sensitive scalps. These wigs do not have any wefting, they are hand-tied all the way around.
PARTIAL MONOFILAMENT WIGS
Partial monofilament wigs are a hybrid between machine made (or machine-tied) and monofilament designs. Partial monofilament caps allow for a realistic-looking part while maintaining volume. These are similar to the lace part wigs with a realistic part, but have more flexibility with that flexible area being on about half of the top of the cap.
HOW TO CHOSE THE RIGHT WIG CAP CONSTRUCTION
Selecting the perfect wig cap depends on several factors, including comfort, styling preference, budget and durability:
If you want your wig to have extra volume or you have a smaller spending budget: Choose a **machine-tied cap**.
If you want your wig to have the most natural scalp effect: Opt for a **monofilament wig cap**.
If your goal is for your wig to have a seamless hairline: Go with a **lace front wig**.
If you have a sensitive scalp: Try **double monofilament wigs** or **hand-tied wigs**.
If you’re unsure of which wig cap is best for you, we recommend going to a wig shop to try on a wig in person! The fun thing about wigs is you can also try different looks and cap constructions with your different wigs!
